The official name for Venezuela is actually the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and has a rich history as much as its neighbouring countries of Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. It was colonised by the Spanish in the early Sixteenth century but was the first to gain independence in 1811, although it took another decade for this to take effect in any reasonable fashion. During the Nineteenth century and into the Twentieth it was further plunged into turmoil by the Caudillos. It also suffered from terrible economic crises during the last century and then a strict socialist planned economy following the 1997 election of Hugo Chávez.
Much of the economy is powered by oil industry given its abundant resources. The country is less well known for the fantastic and rare cacao that is grown in the valleys to the north of the country that dips into the Atlantic Ocean.
